Squarespace vs WordPress , Shopify, and Wix Store
I have worked with both Squarespace and WordPress.org, and through that experience, I’ve learned which platform is better suited for different types of users. For individuals without technical knowledge, Squarespace is usually the easier and more reliable choice. Its interface is simple, and it doesn’t require any coding or complex setup. WordPress.org, on the other hand, demands more maintenance and technical skill. That difference alone can make the decision challenging for many business owners.
WordPress.org requires frequent updates, plugin management, and occasional troubleshooting. These tasks can feel overwhelming if you’re not familiar with coding or website maintenance. I personally have a background in technical studies from college, so handling WordPress hosting isn’t difficult for me. Even with that knowledge, I still recognize how demanding the platform can be. Not everyone wants to spend time managing the technical side of their website.
One of the biggest concerns with WordPress.org is the security risk that comes with plugins. Many plugins are created by third‑party developers, and not all of them are secure or well‑maintained. This can lead to vulnerabilities that put your website at risk. Because of these issues, I don’t feel comfortable recommending WordPress.org to most people. The potential problems outweigh the benefits in my opinion.
Indeed, WordPress hosting is often cheaper than platforms like Squarespace, Shopify, or Wix. However, the lower cost doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the better option. Many people assume that paying for hosting means they fully own their website, but that isn’t entirely accurate. Hosting companies and the leadership behind WordPress.com still have control over the platform itself. That means issues can still arise even if you’re paying for hosting.
I ultimately chose Squarespace because it offered the best balance of cost, reliability, and simplicity. Platforms like Wix and Shopify can become expensive, especially for small business owners. Squarespace provides the features I need without unnecessary complications. Another factor that influenced my decision is that Squarespace is based in my country, which gives me peace of mind in case legal matters ever arise. For me, choosing a platform that feels secure and stable is just as important as choosing one that looks good.
